Compliance timeline
- January 1, 2017: New builds must meet the requirements.
- January 1, 2022: All dwellings sold or leased and Government-owned housing must comply with the requirements
- January 1, 2027: Domestic dwellings must comply, including homeowners.
Smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom of a home and at least one smoke alarm should be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.
Multi-level dwellings will require an alarm on each level regardless of containing a bedroom or not.
